Contour Line

A contour line is a line used to define the edges and outlines of a form. It is probably the most common use of line in art, according to our book.

This piece by Picasso is a perfect example of a contour drawing. This is simple, and shows just the exterior edges of the subjects.

In this contour drawing of a still life, notice that there is no shading. Also, notice how deliberate and precise the lines are.

Line as Emotion

The type of line ine can be directly linked to the mood an artwork conveys.

the horizontal lines give this Giorgione painting a calm demeanor and conveys a restful emotion.

while the diagonal lines in this painting emphasize the movement of the dancer, and convey an exciting emotion.

Line as Shape

Lines form and define the the edges of various shapes.

in this Cezanne still life, line defines the edge of the table and also where objects meet, forming shapes.

when we recognize a shape we also recognize the object.

like here, these are just a series of lines that form shapes, but it's immediately recognizable as the painting Starry Night, even though it has no color or texture.
