Lines form and define the the edges of various shapes.

in this Cezanne still life, line defines the edge of the table and also where objects meet, forming shapes.








when we recognize a shape we also recognize the object.

like here, these are just a series of lines that form shapes, but it's immediately recognizable as the painting Starry Night, even though it has no color or texture.
